Morning arrival at Aix en Provence TGV railroad station. Pick up car rental. Drop off your luggage at Hotel Le Pigonnet in Aix. Lunch at leisure. Walking tour of Aix, "on the trail of Cézanne " (1 h30). Take your car and go to Cézanne studio (10minutes) for a tour (30
minutes). On to Montagne Ste Victoire area that Cézanne painted
so often (complete driving tour of 1h30). Dinner at leisure in old Aix.
Overnight le Pigonnet, town mansion.
Breakfast
at the hotel. Suggested departure time: 9:00am. On to Avignon (1h). Tour
of Palace of the Popes (1h15). Tour of Avignon by little touristic train
leaving in front of Palace of the Popes (50 minutes). On to saint Remy
de Provence (30 minutes). Free time for lunch and to walk through this
typical" Provence town". On to Les Baux (10 minutes) Tour of the "ghost
castle" and medieval town overlooking the whole region. (1h30). On to
Arles (40 minutes) for tour of the roman arenas and the old town. (1h30).
Back to Aix (1h30) for dinner at leisure and overnight at Hotel
Le Pigonnet.
Breakfast at the hotel. Suggested departure time: 10am.On to Isle sur la Sorgue (1h) (if Sunday) for Antique Market. Or if other day on to Gordes (1h), for a dramatic view from this perched village. Free time for shopping and strolling through its vaulted, arcaded medieval lanes. On through scenic road to Roussillon (20 minutes), stunning hilltop village built with inviting deep ochre. (Pink colors). Lunch at leisure (le bistro de Roussillon). On to Menerbes (15 minutes), a 16th century village, which current life was described by Peter Mayle in his Year in Provence Book. On to Lacoste (10 minutes) where you will see the ruins of Marquis de Sade’s castle. On to Bonnieux (10 minutes) where you might want to pay a visit to the bread making Museum. On to Lourmarin (15 minutes) where the countess d’Agoult bore Franz Liszt 3 children, one marrying Richard Wagner. On to Abbaye de Silvacane (10minutes) for tour of this 12th century Cistercian Monastery. Back to Aix (45 minutes) for dinner at leisure. Overnight Hotel Le Pigonnet
